Tennessee Category 3 Pesticide Certification Practice Exam

White grubs and cutworms are indeed significant groups of pests that cause damage to turf in Tennessee. White grubs, which are the larval stage of scarab beetles, feed on the roots of grass, leading to patchy areas and potential lawn death if infestations are severe. They are notably prevalent in the summer months when temperatures rise.

Cutworms, on the other hand, are young larvae of various moth species and are known for their propensity to sever grass blades at or just above the soil line, creating visible brown patches in lawns. Their feeding activities can drastically affect the aesthetic and health of turf areas, especially in newly established or weakened grasses.

In the context of the other options, while pests like chinch bugs can also be problematic, their impact is generally less severe compared to that of white grubs and cutworms in many situations. Similarly, although billbugs and certain caterpillars can damage lawns, white grubs and cutworms tend to be more prevalent and cause significant issues in Tennessee specifically. Fleas and ticks are more related to pet and wildlife infestations rather than direct damage to turf itself. The focus on white grubs and cutworms encompasses both the scope of damage and their prevalence in Tennessee.
